How to Use the Gantt Chart

The Gantt Chart provides a visual timeline of your project's milestones and tasks, showing how work is distributed over time and where deadlines fall.

Accessing the Gantt Chart

Open any project detail page and click the "Gantt Chart" button. The chart is available for any project that has milestones or tasks with dates.

Understanding the Timeline

The horizontal axis shows calendar days. Key features of the date header:

  • Day numbers — Displayed every 3 days for readability.
  • Weekends — Shown with a shaded background.
  • Today — Highlighted in the primary color so you can quickly see where you are in the timeline.

The date range is automatically calculated from the earliest and latest dates across all items, with a small buffer added on both ends.

Milestones on the Chart

Milestones are shown with a flag icon () in the Item column and include the following visual elements:

  • Green bar — Spans from the milestone's Created Date to its Due Date, showing the planned timeframe.
  • Green diamond (◆) — Marks the Due Date position on the timeline.
  • Blue diamond (◆) — Marks the Completed Date, shown only when the milestone has been completed. This lets you compare planned vs. actual completion.
  • Red bar / red diamond — If the milestone is past its due date and not yet completed, both the bar and diamond turn red to indicate it is overdue.
💡 Tip:

When a milestone's completed date diamond appears before the due date diamond, it means the milestone was finished early. When it appears after, it was completed late.

Tasks on the Chart

Tasks are shown with a checkbox icon () in the Item column:

  • Blue bar — Spans from the task's Created Date to its Due Date.
  • Red bar — If the task is past its due date and not marked as done or cancelled, it turns red to indicate it is overdue.

If a task has no due date, a default duration of 3 days from its creation date is shown.

Field Summary

Item Type Bar Starts At Bar Ends At Markers
Milestone Created Date Due Date ◆ Due Date (green), ◆ Completed Date (blue)
Task Created Date Due Date

Clickable Items

Each item name in the left column is a clickable link. Click on a milestone name to go to its detail page, or click on a task name to view that task.

Legend

Below the chart you'll find a color legend explaining each visual element:

  • Blue bar — Task
  • Green bar — Milestone
  • Green diamond — Due Date
  • Blue diamond — Completed Date
  • Red — Overdue item

Scrolling & Navigation

If your project spans a long period, the chart is horizontally scrollable. The Item column stays fixed on the left so you can always see which row you're looking at while scrolling through dates.

Empty State

If a project has no milestones or tasks with dates, the Gantt chart will show an empty state message prompting you to add milestones or tasks first.
